Thanksgiving.  A time of family, abundance, thankfulness and fellowship.

While we are on the theme of learning to love and respect each other better, another powerful theme for good is sustainability - the care of our planet.

For many of today’s businesses, organizational design follows a well-trodden path – whether by functional role from the CEO on down, by business unit, or by product or service line.  We’ve written about these patterns in a number of past blogs

We’ve also touched on recent innovations in organizational structure, as in our recent blog series from organizational design innovation expert David Creelman.

In past blogs we have explored the "how tos" and evolving approaches towards the process of organizational design.  In this first blog of a five part series on innovative and emerging alternatives for the organization of the workplace, organizational design expert David Creelman explores the fissured organization.

When you walk into a brand-name hotel, who are the people behind the counter? You probably think they are hotel employees; after all, they are wearing that brand on their uniforms. However, chances are they are not that brand's employees; they probably work for an intermediate firm like White Lodging, which runs hotel operations for famous chains like Marriott and Hilton. If you walk out of one hotel to a competitor across the street, you might well find that the workers at the new hotel are also White Lodging employees.

In today's blog we're sharing  some tips about organizational design, extracted from a recent article entitled "10 Principles of Organization Design" which you can read here.

The article was published recently by Strategy& (the former Booz & Company organization acquired last year by global services organization PWC).

Formed in 1914, and one of the earliest management consulting companies Booz was described by Time magazine in the 1950s as "the world's largest, most prestigious management consulting firm"; known, among other things, for coining the concepts of and doing pioneering advisory work in such areas as supply chain management, product lifecycles, and organizational DNA.

We're also going to close off by sharing a neat trick with users working in any organization with an alumni association or alumni network.  You can use Organimi to create an alumni network org chart (regions, chapters, local associations) and also create an "influence diagram" for your organization's alumni network.  We've done the example using some notable alumni of Strategy&.found online.

Imagine the new year fifteen years from now, in 2030, when today's huge downtown office skyscrapers in some of the world's largest cities have been recycled into mixed use commercial and residential condominium complexes.....to deal with the vast surplus capacity of office space generated by the coming "go remote" tipping point for most of today's services organizations.

This will be one of the many societal transformations resulting from our continuing shift worldwide to remote work, virtual teams and virtual organizations; a process now well under way with today's early adopters.
